Dental pain rarely waits for a convenient time, and "same-day" or "emergency" appointments are some of the most commonly searched dental terms, for good reason. But the phrase gets used loosely, and what it means in practice varies a lot from one practice to the next.
What "same-day" usually means
Most practices that advertise same-day appointments keep a small number of slots unbooked each day specifically for urgent cases, or ask you to call first thing so they can fit you in around scheduled patients. It rarely means walk in any time and be seen within minutes, it usually means seen that day, often with a wait, and often after a phone triage call to check how urgent it actually is.
What actually counts as a dental emergency
Severe or worsening pain, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, and swelling that's affecting your ability to swallow or breathe are the situations practices treat as genuinely urgent. A knocked-out adult tooth in particular is time-sensitive, being seen within about 30 to 60 minutes meaningfully improves the chance the tooth can be saved, which is worth knowing before you decide to wait it out.
A lot of what people search for as "emergency", a chipped tooth with no pain, a lost filling that isn't causing discomfort, mild sensitivity, is genuinely urgent to get looked at soon, but rarely needs to be seen within the hour. Most practices will still try to fit these in within a day or two rather than treating them as an after-hours emergency.
