Why Your Practice's Online Profile Matters More Than Your Website Ranking

For a long time, the entire online-visibility conversation for a dental practice was one question: where do we rank on Google? That question still matters, but it's no longer the only one, and for a lot of practices, it's no longer even the most important one.

Two different questions are now being answered separately

"Who is this dentist and what do they offer" and "is this dentist's website well optimised" used to be answered by the same page, in the same click. Increasingly they're answered by different sources: a Google Business Profile, a directory listing, an AI-generated answer, all pulling from structured, factual information about the practice, versus the actual website, which is what someone visits once they've already decided to look closer or book.

That split means a practice can be genuinely easy to find and choose without its own website ranking particularly well, provided its structured information, services, location, hours, what makes it different, is accurate and available in the places people and AI tools are actually looking.

What a structured profile gives you that a website often doesn't

A well-built website is designed to be experienced, scrolled through, browsed, felt. A structured profile is designed to be extracted, read cleanly by a person skimming in ten seconds, or by an AI system pulling out a fact. Both matter, but they're not interchangeable, and most practice websites (understandably, since they weren't built for this) are much better at the first job than the second.

Fields like "same-day appointments available", "sedation options offered", or "HICAPS on-site" are exactly the kind of specific, structured facts that get surfaced directly in an AI answer or a directory comparison, and they're often buried in a paragraph of website copy rather than stated as a clear, standalone fact anywhere.

Why this is worth acting on before it's competitive

Most practices haven't reorganised their information this way yet, which means the ones that do now get an outsized benefit relative to the effort, there's less competition for a clearly-stated fact than there is for a competitive search ranking. This is the specific gap Dentist360 is being built to close: one place to state, once and clearly, the facts that patients and AI systems are both looking for.

Frequently asked

No. It still matters for conversion once someone has decided to look closer or book. What's changed is that a growing share of the decision now happens before someone reaches your website at all, based on structured information elsewhere.

Start by writing out, in plain sentences, the specific facts a patient would want to know that aren't obvious from your homepage: appointment availability, payment/rebate options, and anything that genuinely differentiates the practice. That's the raw material a good profile, and a good AI citation, is built from.
